So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off. Therefore shalt thou fall in the day, and the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, and I will destroy thy mother.Īs for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water. Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission. Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease (damah) for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.īaldness is come upon Gaza Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley how long will though cut thyself? I have likened (damah) the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence (damah) because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence (damah). Then said I, Woe is me! For I am undone (damah): because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not he is like the bests that perish. This same word is also used in Psalm 49:12 The original Hebrew word in the passage is “damah” which means to “cut off, cease, perish, bring to silence, liken, destroy, undone, utterly cut down. The King James translates this passage as “my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” So what does it actually mean to “perish” in this context? Does it mean that a person will physically die? The definition of the word “perish” in English means “to suffer death, typically in a violent, sudden, or untimely way.” Another definition is to “suffer complete ruin or destruction. What Does the Word “Perish” Actually Mean The result: You can’t tell the people from the priests,Īnd take the consequences of the bad lives they’ve lived. (Have I mentioned before that I hate The Message.)Īnd then the prophets take over and stumble all night.īecause they don’t know what’s right or true.īecause you’ve turned your back on knowledge,īecause you refuse to recognize the revelation of God, Eugene Peterson didn’t even attempt to translate by verse, this is his rendition of verses 4-10. I’m including The Message here just because I know many people like to use it. You priests have refused to acknowledge me and have rejected my teaching, and so I reject you and will not acknowledge your sons as my priests. My people are doomed because they do not acknowledge me. I will also reject you from being My priest. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.īecause you have ignored the law of your God, My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge Īnd since you have forgotten the law of your God, Young’s Literal TranslationĬut off have been My people for lack of knowledge, Because thou knowledge hast rejected, I reject thee from being priest to Me, And thou forgettest the law of thy God, I forget thy sons, I also! Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I will reject you from serving as my priest My people are ruined for lack of knowledge! My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. Let’s look at how different translations handle this passage: King James Version “Because you have forgotten the law of your God, If we reject the fullness of God, which includes the fullness of His Holy Spirit, how can we possibly be in fellowship with Someone when we reject part of who He is?īut if we read on and finish verse six, we begin to get an inkling of what this passage refers to. If we read no farther than this, you might still accept the interpretation of the verse as a denial of the gifts of the spirit. I also will reject you from being a priest for Me. The phrase is the King James translation of Hosea 4:6.
